Indianapolis is best known as the home of the Indianapolis 500. Held each year during Memorial Day weekend, the race annually draws more than 400,000 spectators, making it the world’s largest one-day sporting event. The same track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is also home of the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in early August and the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix in September.
The city is now the third largest city in the Midwest, following only Chicago and Detroit, and is one of the few cities in that region growing at a rate of five percent annually or more. It is the home of Eli Lilly and Co., a giant pharmaceutical firm, as well as other technology firms.
Indianapolis has become well known as a sports center, both professional and amateur. The professional football team is the Indianapolis Colts, but it also headquarters for the national governing bodies of seven sports, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
A number of major universities are also located here. The largest is Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Others include the Indiana University Medical School, Butler University, Marian University, Martin University and the University of Indianapolis.
